When the penny drops…

When the penny drops means – when someone finally understands something that they have not understood previously. Realization.

A Canadian Penny

Imagine: a penny. Any penny. Dropping through the air. And landing.

I first learned the term, the penny dropped, and immediately embraced it, I could see clearly the penny dropping, and when it did, understanding.

I woke this morning, my favourite time, with an AHAH moment, and immediately thought, ’The penny dropped’.

I first heard the term years ago from an English friend. I could visualize that bit of copper falling through the air, suspended, unknown, then landing and suddenly understanding where there was none before.

I love things I learn from the English. Like, your never know your luck until a dead horse kicks you. See, the visual on that is fantastic.

So this morning, as I woke, the penny dropped on something I had not been able to see clearly for several months. An epiphany of sorts. (Also one of my favourite things.)

It’s a bit annoying and making me believe I am not as bright as I thought I was. Why do some things take so long?

But then I ask; is my perception correct?

But I truly do think, when you see that penny drop then it is reliable.

So I guess from North of 43 I am wondering – does the penny drop for you?

One is about 43 degrees latitude N. and longitude 80 W, The other almost equidistant south latitude and longitude 174 E. Two women, two minds, different personalities and experiences, choosing a life of meaning, continual growth and learning, at the same time negating ageist opinions of exactly what ‘an old lady’ should be.

  1. It used to cost one penny to use a public toilet in England (hence the other expression “to spend a penny” for going to the loo). When you put your penny in the slot and it dropped, you could open the door and go into the stall. There were also all kinds of slot machines from gambling machines to vending machines where you put a penny in and – out came your winnings, a chocolate bar or whatever else the machine was dispensing. Aha, the penny dropped!

    1. Sometimes, it’s more than just a penny. Suddenly I see clearly what has been bothering me for a few days, and rather than just a penny it’s like a pound drop in. Thanks for waking me up two more thoughts this morning
