My Life Became Easier When

JB’s last post was about fun words, kangaroo words specifically, something new for me. Intellectual, intriguing, inspiring.

My words today are a bit different and came to me this morning as I was making my bed. I know, I know, quite mundane, right?

Anyway, as I stood at the foot of my bed and raised my arms to unfurl a sheet that floated gently down I found myself thinking how much easier my life has been since I quit tucking in the top sheet.

Well, that’s a strange thought, thought I, but then I realized the truth of it. First I am much less restless in bed trying to get my foot position comfortable. Therefore I am sleeping better, much better. Better sleep = better health.

Bending over to tuck in sheets and the arthritic discomfort of trying to pick up mattress corners is no longer an issue.

Having been a nurse who trained mid-last century when hospital corners were a thing to be judged by, it took a while to consider what seems like such a casual housekeeping style might mean.

But then I was saved by another new philosophy I embraced a few years ago. And I have applied to several areas of my life.

It’s the old WHO SAY’S response.

WHO SAYS sheets have to be tucked? Looks just a good when viewed and more comfortable to lie in. (the bottom sheets are fitted so do not enter into consideration).

WHO SAYS you don’t put anything on window sills (mine are wide and hold books, and plants, and lamps….) oh except for stretches of time when I prefer them clear.

WHO SAYS you can’t wear socks with sandals (this was my response to a friend whose daughter told her this.

WHO SAYS only red wine with beef?

I must say – WHO SAYS are two words that resulted in my life becoming easier whenever I utter them.

Simple words and simple thoughts tonight from North of 43. But I am curious – what makes your life simpler?

One is about 43 degrees latitude N. and longitude 80 W, The other almost equidistant south latitude and longitude 174 E. Two women, two minds, different personalities and experiences, choosing a life of meaning, continual growth and learning, at the same time negating ageist opinions of exactly what ‘an old lady’ should be.

  1. Who says you have to make the bed?
Who says you have to answer phone calls?
Who says you have to butter bread?
Who says you have to paint the walls?
    We all do things out of habit, sadly;
Time to change, things won’t go badly.

    Sorry.

  2. Oh Chris. Yes who says I cant have cereal for dinner. Who says dishes have to be put away before going to bed. Who says bed liben must be ironed and so many other who saids. But I am intrigued. If you dont tuck in the top sheet where does the extra linen go? I tuck mine in but loosen it each night.
